Sibelius Scorch - The web browser plug-in to view, play and print music

What is Sibelius Scorch?

This web site uses Sibelius Scorch, the free software that lets you view, play, transpose and print scores on the Internet. Scorch is a free web browser plug-in from Avid. You can find out more about it at www.sibelius.com/scorch

We use Scorch because, unlike regular PDF files or some other formats, Scorch files are encrypted and the technology ensures that the content cannot be printed without authorisation.

What is a web browser plug-in?

A web browser plug-in is an additional piece of software that works in conjunction with your web browser to perform a particular function. Score Exchange uses a plug-in called Scorch to view, transpose, play and print sheet music.

How do I get Scorch?

If you use Internet Explorer on Windows

Scorch is an ActiveX compatible plug-in. This means that the first time you view a web page containing music, you’ll be asked if you want to install Scorch if you don’t already have it - just click Yes twice, then after a few seconds fill in your details when requested and click I agree. Then the page of music notation should appear.

If you use other browsers on Windows or Mac

If you use other browsers on Windows or Mac, the first time you view a web page containing music, you should be prompted to click a link to download and then install Scorch. You can also click here to get Scorch and follow the instructions to install Scorch if you don’t already have it.

How can I tell if I have installed Scorch?

Have a look at our test score and see if you can view, play and print the music. If you can then Scorch is installed correctly.

If you are using Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion) Scorch will only work with Firefox running in 32 bit mode as described in A611 above. Additionally, if you have upgraded to Safari version 5.1 on any Mac OS, then Scorch will no longer work. You should use Firefox in 32 bit mode, to sucessfully use Scorch. You can also view the official Sibelius compatibility list for Max OS 10.7 (Lion).
