The song dates back to the era of slavery in the United States, when it was common practice to sell children of slaves away from their parents.
The song is clearly an expression of deep anguish and despair as it conveys the abject hopelessness of a child who has lost its mother.
It has been recorded by many notable artists. Van Morisson, Eric Clapton and by teh trumpeter WYNTON MARSALIS, just to name a few.
