This piece is a four-voice isorhythmic motet of early 14th century English origin. The full title is: O Homo Considera (Ponder Well, Oh Man, in Thought)/ O homo de pulvere / Contratenor /Filiae Jerusalem. An isorhythm (from the Greek for "the same rhythm") was a an early musical technique that arranged a fixed pattern of pitches with a repeating rhythmic pattern. Here the anonymous composer weaves independent pitch and rhythmic patterns into a simple yet haunting tapestry. Listen to the MP3 recording by The Brethren Brass for a "real" and accurate performance.
