Samuel Scheidt (1587"1654) was a German composer that wrote this piece originally for four cornetti (curved, wooden instruments of various sizes) that looked like recorders, but were played by buzzing the lips into cup-shaped mouthpieces (like modern brass players.) In contrast to the loud, bright sound of modern brass instruments, cornetti were highly praised for their soft, almost vocal tone color. Scheidts masterpiece was embellished by the virtuoso cornetti players of his time and area, who were obviously able to perform this difficult piece to full potential. Listen to the MP3 recording by The Brethren Brass for a "real" and accurate performance.
