A graduate of the Melbourne University Conservatorium of Music, Helen Blackman has over 30 years experience as a cello teacher and performer. Helen was a member of the ABC National Training Orchestra in Sydney, and the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra. Since moving to Adelaide in 1981, she played for 20 years as a casual cellist in the Adelaide Symphony orchestra, and as a freelance cellist.
Helen was on the AUSTA committee for 9 years including a term as South Australian state president, and is currently a cello examiner for the AMEB. Helen has been teaching cello all her adult life, with over 20 years as a peripatetic teacher in several private schools. She runs an active home teaching studio with a large proportion of her students being adult beginners.
Helen enjoys organising cello workshops for her adult students, arranging multi-levelled ensemble music for each workshop so they can all experience the joy of making music together. It offers a valuable opportunity for the students to talk with other adult learners, and to feel less isolated.
