Peter Martin was born in West Yorkshire. He studied both violin and viola with Suzanne Rozsa and Nannie Jamieson at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, from which he graduated in 1978. In 1986 he was appointed Head of Strings for a LEA music service in Greater Manchester. In addition to his duties as a teacher, Peter has performed regularly throughout the north of England as a free-lance violinist/violist. He has also written and arranged a great deal of educational string music, much of which has been published. His pieces regularly appear on the A.B.R.S.M. string examinations syllabus.
In August 2011 he retired from teaching in order to devote more time to writing and arranging.
