Born into a Salvationist family, Thomas experienced music from a young age. Alongside brass bands, choral music became a particular focus, resulting in a number of church organist positions, most recently as Director of Music at the Church of Saint Andrew and Saint Teilo, Cathays, Cardiff. Following study at the University of Salford with Professor David King (conducting) and Professor Peter Graham (composing), Thomas went on to study composition at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama with Dr Robert Spearing, with postgraduate study in choral conducting with Simon Halsey and Adrian Partington.
