This tune is the French carol, NOEL NOUVELET. Lyrics usually associated with it are "Sing We Now of Christmas" and "Now The Green Blade Riseth."

As for the lyrics: There is something in all of us that remembers the Garden of Eden and longs to return to it. We know things are broken and so we try with our own meager efforts to bring about Paradise on earth. We come up with philosophies, political systems, religions, military actions, government programs, etc. But nothing works. Jesus Christ is our only hope.

Besides Genesis, the main scripture reference for this hymn text is John 14:6 - "Jesus said to him, ’I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.’ "

This hymn works well for the Genesis 3 reading often used in "Lessons and Carols" services during Advent or on Christmas Eve.
