These two songs , numbers 1 and 3 of Mendelssohn’s Six Duets for sopranos and piano (1845), are best known, perhaps, for their inimitable performance on disc by Isabel Baillie and Kathleen Ferrier. They sound lovely when played by flutes, and even the unchallenging (except for the tongue!) lower parts are worth chuntering away for the support they offer to such gloriously Mendelssohnian melodies. Guaranteed to leave listeners and players humming the tunes.
