Movement I is loosely based on "Shortnin’Bread", a tune my mother sang to us when I was little (parental foundation). This is a “Coplandesquecapade”, in a quasi-Rondo form. There is a little Idee Fixe which happens first about mid-way, in the trombones. Like a bad relative, this tune will keep coming back throughout the piece, and in ways that are sometimes hidden, and other times not so much. I use this device as a way of unifying the piece as a whole. Perhaps my own "sense of self" running thru it all.
