Originally written for a children's puppet theatre, this has finally surfaced from a pile in my bottom drawer and been orchestrated, with fresh material added along the way. The Prelude introduces the five main characters: the Forest; Red Riding Hood; Grandmother, the Wolf and, finally, a group of Hunters.

The Forest section uses a whole-tone scale and has a variety of motifs, moving through different colours and shades. The music for Red Riding Hood uses the woodwind and strings, while Grandmother's themes are played by the strings and the horns. The lower brass section describes the arrival of the Wolf. The Hunters trudge warily to the tread of pizzicato strings and low woodwind, letting off a volley when they surprise a flock of birds before disappearing into the distance.
