’’When I am laid in earth’’ from Henry Purcell’s opera Dido and Aeneas, arranged for Flute, Lute & Keyboard. The Lute & DB are optional.

Dido's Lament ("When I am laid in earth") is the closing aria from the opera Dido and Aeneas by Henry Purcell to a libretto by Nahum Tate.

Dido's Lament chromatic fourth ground bass.It is included in many classical music textbooks to illustrate the descending chromatic fourth (passus duriusculus) in the ground bass. The conductor Leopold Stokowski wrote a transcription of the piece for symphony orchestra. This is played annually in London by the massed bands of the Guards Division at the Cenotaph remembrance parade in Whitehall on Remembrance Sunday, the Sunday nearest to November 11 (Armistice Day).

Laments are specifically written for the bagpipes and are performed in Scotland and Ireland on tragic occasions, however they are also found in the traditional music of many countries. In many instances each of the Scottish and Irish clans had their own Lament that was used at burials and other solemn occasions such as the departure of young men for war service and even the return and repatriation of dead war heroes. They express grief usually at the loss of a friend or a famous person and could also be described as musical eulogies. They are also written for vocal and instrumental performance and a very good example in opera is Dido’s lament ’’When I am laid in earth’’ from Henry Purcell’s opera Dido and Aeneas.

Dido’s Lament is built on the Lament Ground Bass, still used today by Chicago (''25 or 6 to 4'')

Sorry seems to be the hardest word by Elton John, and in Pink Elephants on parade used in the Disney animated feature film Dumbo!
