This Somerset folk song was collected by Cecil Sharp (who died in 1924). It is one of most perfect melodies I know, and has fascinated me since I was a schoolboy. I’ve made nearly a dozen arrangements over the years, each a little closer to what I’m after. The big challenge is to introduce enough variety of texture and harmony to sustain six verses, without obscuring the essential simplicity.
