My simple SATB setting, with its minimal accompaniment and harmony and hints of recitative, is intended to suggest the remote bleakness of plainsong and thus underscore the utter loneliness of the one who refuses to listen to the caller, thereby himself becoming outcast and rejected. The Biblical roots of the poem lie in Lamentations, 1:12 and Isaiah, 53:3ff.
