"Lip Service" was composed in December 2005, commissioned by the Bluejuice Big Band (Manchester, UK) and premiered by them in February 2006. The compositional challenge was to write a piece that had a strong groove and melody, and not too many changes. As a result "colours" (such as muted trumpet with flute), voicings and shape come to the fore in this fun and funky chart. Performance note : Horns should be positive at the top of the chart, whilst the rhythm section need to hit a funky, dirty groove from their first note! Lots of bass guitar and rhythm guitar. Careful attention in the writing has been paid to the guitar and keyboard parts, ensuring that both parts don’t just double pages of chord changes. The main theme is stated sparsely at first, (A) then ’fattened out’ on next hearing ©. The tenor sax solo commences with a ’bridge’ that leads into the solo proper (E & F). The riff at H allows your drummer to solo and build. The intensity should be maintained before an alto sax solo. Directed sustained chords punctuate a final drum solo to conclude "Lip Service.

Which method of viewing music should I use?

Score Exchange has two methods of display previews of music: seView which uses regular html and javascipt and the Scorch plug-in from Avid which needs to be downloaded and installed onto your computer. Both have advantages and disadvantages:

seView

seView, is the most compatible option. You should be able to view music on all modern web browsers including most mobile devices. Even if your device does not support javascript you should still be able to preview at least page one of the music.

You do not need to install any additional software to use seView.

Scorch

Scorch is a free plug-in from Avid for displaying and printing music. It can also play the music that you're seeing. Scorch generally works well if you're using a windows computer, but is currently not compatible with modern Mac computers or mobile devices.

If your web browser does not install Scorch automatically, you can click here to download and install scorch manually.
