The source of this song is possibly an 18th century English folksong entitled "The Unfortunate Rake", and evolved into an American standard blues number through many different names, in particular "The Gamblers Blues".� "St James Infirmary Blues" has been recorded by many notable artists, such as, Billy Holiday, Louis Armstrong, Cab Calloway and Stan Kenton just to name a few.�
