"Columbia, the Gem of the Ocean" is of uncertain origin. The melody has been claimed as an English composition under the title "Brittania, the Pride of the Ocean." The text was written by well-known Philadelphia actor Thomas A’Becket, Sr., of the Chestnut Theater, in 1843 at the behest of David T. Shaw for a benefit. Becket adapted the piece, changing its beginning and ending. The date given by Mr. A’becket for this adaptation is 1843.
