Paper Doll is a delicate piece which demands control, sensitivity and versatility from each performer in order to convey the child-like, innocent quality of the subtle motifs and melodies.

Written for the Lunar Saxophone Quartet, Paper Doll was composed as a deliberate juxtaposition to much of the current Saxophone Quartet repertoire.

As the title suggests, the music is child-like and playful in style, but very fragile and delicate. Almost entirely "sempre p" throughout, Paper Doll explores the use of different combinations of instruments within the ensemble. The use of silence and space in the music is a vital component to the ambience - the silences within the piece should be interpreted by the players as part of the performance itself, as it is the differences in texture which create the "brittle" fluidity of the music.

The continuously quiet dynamics and full use of the range of the instruments demands control, sensitivity and versatility from each performer in order to convey the innocent quality of the piece. Subtle motifs and melodies are intertwined, interlocked and exchanged between each part, ensuring that each performer has a vital part to play.

Which method of viewing music should I use?

Score Exchange has two methods of display previews of music: seView which uses regular html and javascipt and the Scorch plug-in from Avid which needs to be downloaded and installed onto your computer. Both have advantages and disadvantages:

seView

seView, is the most compatible option. You should be able to view music on all modern web browsers including most mobile devices. Even if your device does not support javascript you should still be able to preview at least page one of the music.

You do not need to install any additional software to use seView.

Scorch

Scorch is a free plug-in from Avid for displaying and printing music. It can also play the music that you're seeing. Scorch generally works well if you're using a windows computer, but is currently not compatible with modern Mac computers or mobile devices.

If your web browser does not install Scorch automatically, you can click here to download and install scorch manually.
