Hallasan Blues is a short solo Bassoon piece written for Rob Howard based around the intervals of a short motif I used in an earlier piece, minor second and perfect fourth. I was also inspired by the fact that Rob plays viola too and was interested in the percussive sounds obtained by using a viola bow on the surfaces of a bassoon.

Hallasan is a dormant volcano on Jeju island of South Korea. However I have not been there and this piece isn’t about it. I just liked the title. It is, nonetheless, a rather lonely piece. In this sense the "Blues" part of the title is more important than the "Hallasan".
