Music notation spans human culture for more than 3000 years. Here are two ancient melodies: The legendary founder of Chinese music was Ling Lun, who was famous for making bamboo pipes tuned to the sounds of birds. Music was seen as central to the harmony and well-being of the state. It is said imperial inspectors would visit the provinces to report on the condition and quality of the music of the local region.

The Seikilos epitaph is the oldest known complete musical composition. It was found engraved on a tombstone near Ephesus. It states: "While you live, shine. Don't suffer anything at all; Life exists only a short while, And time demands its toll."
