The slow movement is one of Bach’s greatest creations. Bach sustains his poignant inspiration for more than four minutes with a serpentine melody of breath-taking beauty. It is this movement that presents the strongest case that Bach envisioned the "Italian" Concerto for a sustained melodic solo instrument like the flute – and not for the percussive, inexpressive harpsichord.
