The Litany is a form of prayer and supplication in which a humble entreaty or petition by the supplicant is made to God, the Virgin Mary, or the saints. In Psalm XIII David prays to God to be preserved from his enemies. The earliest Christian litanies are sets of diaconal petitions in monotonal psalmodic plainsong with a congregational response such as �Kyrie eleison� or �Grant this, O Lord�. The use of Polyphony, in the sense of vocal music in more than one part, developed between roughly the 10th and the 13th centuries, and one of the most popular of these was the �Litaniae lauretanae� (�Litany of Loreto�) in honour of the Virgin Mary which inspired numerous polyphonic settings, by such composers as Victoria, Palestrina, and Mozart.
