This fugue for organ uses the Gigue (French spelling), which is an old dance in an animated 6/8 or 12/8 time, and is regularly found in suites, where it forms the finale. Some of the dates assigned to individual works are of course only conjectural, but in the chronology of Bachs works he had written some of his finest organ works, and most of the great Preludes and Fuges were composed when he resided in Weimar where he went in 1703 as a violinist in the ducal orchestra. In this arrangement dynamics are editorial.
