The John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, UK, has a flourishing orchestra. In 2003 they asked me to compose a fanfare to open a Jubilee concert. One of the main works in the concert was a fine piece,’Four Queens’, written by the founder of the orchestra and its conductor for many years, Dr.Donald Lane. The brass section had no difficulty playing this fanfare, but I don’t know whether or not it’s easier than Grade 7-8, because they are all very good players. (Brass experts, do comment.) If anyone wants to adapt this to use with silver or brass band as opposed to orchestral brass, feel free, but please mention the Radcliffe Orchestra. Thanks.
