ENGLISH SONG: It was a lover and his lass Music: Thomas Morley (1557-1604) Text: William Shakespeare from As You Like It

Thomas Morley the son of a brewer from Norwich was born in 1557 or 1558, and died in 1602. He probably received his earliest musical education as a chorister at Lincoln Cathedral. Later he was a Gentleman of the Chapel Royal, and became organist of St. Pauls in 1591. Morley composed many songs, madrigals, anthems and services, which are still extant. His two songs in this collection, It was a lover and his lass and the madrigal, Now is the month of maying, which is a form of composition for several voices and is known as the Fa-La or Ballet were very popular in Morleys day, and are quintessentially English in character.
