I would normally wait until I had completed all four movements of a symphony before publishing it, but unwelcome news from my doctor has put me under a time constraint. I hope, nevertheless, to finish it.
The Kent/Sussex Weald is the land in south-east England lying between the North and South Downs. The Wealden Sinfonia is an amateur orchestra in which I have had half a lifetime of happy playing. It meets at Tunbridge Wells, which is on the Weald and provides no views of it. But I also played in the North Downs Sinfonia which meets at Tatsfield, high on the North Downs and affording, from Tatsfield church, a breathtaking view of the Weald. This work is a farewell to my friends in the Wealden Sinfonia and is my attempt to convey something of my feeling about the panorama of the Weald as seen from Tatsfield.
