Goethe's poem may not touch a chord in the hearts of today's youngsters but Schubert's song still moves them, in my experience. In arranging this, one of my favourite of all songs, I wanted to introduce my charges to the magical world of Lieder–– and what better way is there than via the inspired music of Franz Schubert? His, and Goete's, song after all, expresses WHY all of us make music, doesn't it? The dynamic markings are my interpretation: others may find them excessive. I particularly like the sound of solo cello combined with violas, each enriching the other, for the beginning of verse two.
