THE REBELLION OF THE uNITED IRISHMEN IN 1798 IS COMMEMORATED IN A WEALTH OF SPLENDID BALLADS. THESE WERE PART OF THE THE MUSICAL HERITAGE OF EVERY IRISH PRIMARY SCHOOL CHILD UNTIL APPROXIMATELY 1970. SINGING OF PATRIOTIC BALLADS BECAME 'POLITICALLY INCORRECT' AFTER THIS, BECAUSE OF THE CONFLICT IN NORTHERN IRELAND. THESE FINE SONGS WERE APPROPRIATED BY SUPPORTERS OF THE PROVISIONAL IRA AND, BECAUSE OF THIS, A WHOLE GENERATION OF IRISH CHILDREN, THROUGHOUT THE REST OF THE ISLAND, WAS DEPRIVED OF PART OF ITS HERITAGE. THE 200TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE REBELLION PROVIDED ME WITH THE OPPORTUNITY OF TEACHING THESE FINE TUNES TO MY ORCHESTRA.
