The Fugues in Bach’s 48 are masterpieces of contrapuntal writing. Although written for keyboard, the clarity of the part writing lends itself to an instrumental performance. This fugue, (Book 1, No 8) is presented here for a string trio of violin, viola and cello. The original is in Eb minor, not an accommodating key for strings, so it is given here in E minor. It is not a short piece and quite demanding. The score is presented, as Bach’s original, without dynamics or phrasing, so there is plenty of scope for developing ensemble playing.
