This dance was the Debussy's first published work for solo piano. There is some gipsiness in this little piece and a few dashes of polka rhythm. It had been written for Tchaikovsky's patroness, Nadezdha von Meck, who met Debussy for the first time on July 10, 1880. Being not a piece of great originality it sounds very delightful and fits very well for a string quartet.
