Violas from MOZART - STARR; Komm, Liebe Zither, Komm, KV 351/367b (song for voice and mandolin arranged by Mark Starr for voice and orchestra)

Composer
W. A. Mozart
Duration
2 minutes
Genre
Classical music

Mozart composed this charming love song for voice and mandolin. This was not his only song with mandolin. Don Giovanni’s Serenade to Donna Elvira is one of that opera’s most exquisite moments.

Because the mandolin goes down only to Middle C, Komm, liebe Zither, komm has no bass line in Mozart’s original. In my arrangement, I have added a bass line and filled in the implied harmonies. Then, I have arranged the accompaniment for string orchestra.

The solo part should be played by a mandolin, as Mozart intended. I should note that in many orchestras (especially opera orchestras,) some violinists may also play the mandolin.

Nevertheless, since access to a suitable mandolin player may be limited for a particular orchestra, a harp makes a fine substitute.

The ideal performance would enlist the services of a zither soloist. Of course, they are even rarer than mandolin players.

There is a remarkable performance by baritone Hermann Prey and zither on YouTube.

Which method of viewing music should I use?

Score Exchange has two methods to display previews of music: seView which uses regular html and javascipt and the Scorch plug-in from Avid which needs to be downloaded and installed onto your computer. Both have advantages and disadvantages:

seView

seView, is the most compatible option. You should be able to view music on all modern web browsers including most mobile devices. Even if your device does not support javascript you should still be able to preview at least page one of the music.

You do not need to install any additional software to use seView.

Scorch

Scorch is a free plug-in from Avid for displaying and printing music. It can also play the music that you're seeing. As modern web browsers are updated, Scorch is no longer compatible with many browsers. Scorch has never been compatible with mobile devices and some web browsers on Mac computers.

If your web browser does not install Scorch automatically, you can click here to download and install scorch manually.
