1st Violins from The Sunbird's Yearly Challenge
The piece consists of an 11-bar-long chorale-type melody which I wrote some time ago, followed by six "variations" in concertante style. The instrumentation is for small orchestra with a horn and solo muted trumpet (or Yamaha Silent Trumpet) supplementing the woodwinds. I say variations guardedly, because instead of running through a litany of styles and tempi the first three keep close to the original metre, while the fourth even digresses by introducing extraneous material. The fifth is more like a recap with descant, while the sixth which arrives as a surprise, though a true variation, sounds more like a parting flourish. Needs another movement to follow it. Coming soon.
