The dramatic opening was inspired by the power and scale of the Grand Canyon in Arizona. Walnut Canyon, also in Arizona, was the home of a long-lost Indian tribe of hill-cave dwellers, named the Sinagua. (Spanish = ’without water’). The merry Hispanic Festival was inspired by a small town in the South-West where everyone spoke Spanish, the shops all sold Mexican food, and there was a happy, care-free carnival atmosphere everywhere. The story of the Pueblo peoples in New Mexico inspied the Pueblo Lament, which features the pentatonic minor scale typically played on native flutes by the Pueblo.
