The opening flute line is the call of a Blue Jay as I heard it one cold winter morning. Each instrument is given a set of four pitches to play, of which they share one. Throughout the piece as the violin and cello part try to mimic the blue jay, their pitches change but they never do more than callously imitate the music of nature.
