The reference in the title to Anton Webern suggests, just as in Ravel’s pieces ’in the manner of’ Borodin and Chabrier, not a pastiche of Webern’s style, but rather by making various references to aspects of his music. Hence, each piece is extremely brief; numbers 1 and 2 draw on imitation; number 3 refers to his pointillistic nature and number 4 explores extreme pianissimo. None of the pieces, however, use the 12-tone technique, which is consistent with Webern’s earlier style, for example, 5 pieces for string quartet, 6 pieces of orchestra and 5 pieces for orchestra. The total duration is less than 3 minutes 45 seconds.
