Charles Gounod supplied the descant (set to the words of the Ave Maria) to J. S. Bach’s Prelude No. 1 in C Major from the "Well-Tempered Clavier." I have added string quartet parts. It can be performed with or without vocalist (with the first violin playing the melodic line). This has been frequently requested at weddings (an alternate to the oft-performed Schubert Ave Maria).
