Claude Gervaise (fl. 1540 " 1560) was a French composer of the Renaissance. His instrumental music is the most famous portion of his output. Most of his music is in four parts, and is intended for dancing. The melodies are simple in his instrumental music, and the texture is almost always homophonic, making the music ideal for dancing. Gervaises Pavane was written in 1547, and makes for one beautiful, yet melancholy, dance. Listen to the MP3 recording by The Brethren Brass for a "real" and accurate performance.
