This is a traditional English dance tune believed to have emerged just before the middle of the sixteenth century. The tune was most probably played on lute and harpsichord or other keyboard instruments during its heyday. The peasant-like festive character gives it a graceful, gypsy-like rhythmic drive and exoticism. The dompe (dump) is thought to be a lamenting kind of English dance (an Elizabethan dance of the lower class)but it may also be a lively dance form. A wonderful way to showcase your trumpets! Listen to the MP3 recording by The Brethren Brass for a "real" and accurate performance.
