When composing this set of three pieces I aimed at evoking some of the interplay that occurs between a loving couple: the bustle of shared lives, teasing and tenderness, the occasional huff; trusting display and the sense of wonder that intimacy can unlock.
The second and third movements fuse popular and classical idiom. The second movement is technically the easiest and is also the most lyrical (the ‘soft centre’).
The first movement also contains elements of stylistic fusion, most conspicuously the unaccompanied blues solo given to the cello. This movement is the most demanding.
The cello and piano are equal partners.
