William Baines (1899-1922) was a gifted Yorkshire composer and pianist who died tragically young at the aged of only 23. Whilst he is largely remembered for his solo piano works (including Tides, Seven Preludes and Paradise Gardens), he also wrote a large-scale Symphony, chamber and instrumental music and a number of songs. The Violin Sonata in G was written in 1917 and then substantially revised in 1919. He consulted the York violinist Madge Tuff (who played in the orchestra at the Fossgate Cinema, where Baines’s father was the resident organist) with regard to the solo writing.
