Vanhal’s melodic inventiveness and excitement at the technical possibilities open to players of the transverse flute are fully exemplified in this delightful duet. It’s also a bit if an endurance test for both players: flute 2 has just as demanding a part as flute 1, and there are no opportunities for a rest. This would be great fun as background music to a meal or party, and simply as home entertainment. There are two movements to this typically early classical piece: a sonata-form Moderato, and a minuet-like Rondo. Both have a delightful quasi-Mozartian charm.
