Harp from Romance for Horn & Orchestra

7 minutes
Modern classical music

This piece was composed as a special anniversary present for my wife, Joyce, to mark our 30 years together. The opening theme was first sketched many moons ago, when I was a student but only decades later found the right framework and impulse to form a complete work. The style is full-blooded late-romantic (for which I make no apology), with just a few touches of bi-tonality.

In 2004, I chose this piece for a conducting workshop with the London Forum Sinfonietta and re-orchestrated it to suit the smaller forces - single woodwind, addition of trumpet and trombone, piano instead of harp and no timpani. This slimmed-down version is available at: www.sibeliusmusic.com/cgi-bin/show_score.pl?scoreid=46543

In August 2008, in response to a call for scores, I substantially revised the orchestration, expanding the lower woodwind and dividing the violas and cellos, and it is this version that has now been uploaded here. I have since heard that the work has been accepted for a play-through in October 2008 by the London Gay Symphony Orchestra, with the prospect of eventually being chosen for a concert performance.

I recommend listening to the attached mp3 file which uses GPO sound samples and is a far better representation of the work than Scorch playback.

Which method of viewing music should I use?

Score Exchange has two methods to display previews of music: seView which uses regular html and javascipt and the Scorch plug-in from Avid which needs to be downloaded and installed onto your computer. Both have advantages and disadvantages:

seView, is the most compatible option. You should be able to view music on all modern web browsers including most mobile devices. Even if your device does not support javascript you should still be able to preview at least page one of the music.

You do not need to install any additional software to use seView.

Scorch is a free plug-in from Avid for displaying and printing music. It can also play the music that you're seeing. As modern web browsers are updated, Scorch is no longer compatible with many browsers. Scorch has never been compatible with mobile devices and some web browsers on Mac computers.

If your web browser does not install Scorch automatically, you can click here to download and install scorch manually.
