I’ve taken a well known traditional melody from the eastern part of the Mediterranean basin to create an arrangement with some original composition for my musician friends. I have tried to combine the feel of the maqamat with a little of the spirit of modal jazz.

After a short introduction, I wanted to respect the tradition of Arab and Turkish music by presenting the the main scale using a solo instrument. The solo clarinet plays this taqsim with occasional punctuations from the orchestra. The main scale is a double harmonic in D (based on the maqam hijaz but with a small modulation to nahawand).

Next, I return to the main theme followed by a modulation up a semi-tone and then down a tone. For the climax, I return to the original mode with a nod to the world of klezmer music.

The principal melody is well known under the name "Misrlou" - ’young girl from Egypt’.

I present my arrangement of Misrlou under the title "Minerlou" - ’for a young lady of the Minervois’, a wine growing region of the south of France, not far from Carcassonne.

Which method of viewing music should I use?

Score Exchange has two methods to display previews of music: seView which uses regular html and javascipt and the Scorch plug-in from Avid which needs to be downloaded and installed onto your computer. Both have advantages and disadvantages:

seView

seView, is the most compatible option. You should be able to view music on all modern web browsers including most mobile devices. Even if your device does not support javascript you should still be able to preview at least page one of the music.

You do not need to install any additional software to use seView.

Scorch

Scorch is a free plug-in from Avid for displaying and printing music. It can also play the music that you're seeing. As modern web browsers are updated, Scorch is no longer compatible with many browsers. Scorch has never been compatible with mobile devices and some web browsers on Mac computers.

If your web browser does not install Scorch automatically, you can click here to download and install scorch manually.
