These simple canons were written to round off a performance by the Oxford Trumpet Consort in the beautiful surroundings of Magdalen College Chapel, Oxford, in the Winter of 1996. The players were spacially arranged around the altar to add to the atmosphere. The playing should be very sustained, quiet and under-stated; I used the pieces to demonstrate the versatility of the trumpet, which had spent much of the evening in its high register playing florid Baroque works.
