This piece was written in 1999 for a brass band composers' competition. There is nothing "programmatic" about the choice of title, my teacher merely suggested I name it after something large and impressive! The Old Man of Hoy is one of the most famous landmarks in the Orkney Islands, where I was born. It is a 450-foot sandstone stack rising just off the coast of Hoy, Orkney's second largest island, and is a popular challenge for climbers (the first ascent by Chris Bonington and his team was famously televised in 1966).
