The second of a set of thee string quartet pieces, the Adagietto is a representation of a melancholy conversation. It is a lament, with sadness mixed with cherished memories and a sprinkling of anger. I chose the key of F because I hear it as having a bright colourful nature; I did not wish to make the piece into something mournful or remorseful.
I envisaged it played with tenderness and much expression, with nicely placed portamento, subtle attack and swell in the solo figures. I inserted touch 4th harmonics as an option, because I love the sound when played well and it fitted well with the pieces sentiment. Touch 4th harmonics are not easy so hopefully the normal notation will do the job a little easier if desired. The closing crescendo should be as lush as possible, although not marked: ‘sul tasto’.
