Piano from Ecstatic Regret [4-tet version]
This is slightly different from the solo piano version. The additional melodic instrument allows for some contrapuntal complexities, yet also, through the saxophone's sustained sound capacity, for melodic simplifications. Though the bass part is written out, the registers, notes, and figures can be modified, if the bassist chooses. Similarly, revoicing the chords in spots is not to be ruled out, if it achieves a more musical result.
The piece is enthusiastically dedicated to Ms. Laila Biali, brilliant pianist and dear soul. To preserve her anonymnity in the Witness Protection Program, I took the precaution of misspelling her name on the printed sheet..
This piece has recently been recorded by a tiopflight crew of Toronto musicians, under the leadership of guitarist Steve Cole. I'll post the MP3 as soon as it's available.
