One of my favorite pastimes is to go through old sheet music looking for forgotten gems to disinter. My latest search has revealed this bizarre piece. I can find no information whatsoever about C. Nolff, but it turns out that Thomas Dodworth was a member of an English family that moved to America in the 19th century and pioneered wind bands. Many of the bands the Dodworths started were hired to provide service for military regiments, and in 1842, Thomas Dodworth helped found the New York Philharmonic.

The earliest use of an asymmetrical meter that I know of in classical music is the second movement of Tchaikowsky’s Sixth Symphony of 1893, but the date on this sheet music is 1877. I dare say that it’s another American first!
