This original piece was inspired by the great rags composed by Scott Joplin, many of which have been transcribed successfully for brass bands and quintets. This style of music seems to work well with brass instrumentation, and I have always found rags to be fun to play. There is lots of interplay between the sections in this arrangement and opportunity for dramatic dynamics and accents. The Kapiti Brass have enjoyed playing this rag many times in concert and it has gone over very well with audiences, with requests for encores and even for piano lead sheets.
The Reikorangi Rag was written for the Kapiti Brass in New Zealand. The band rehearses in the hills above Waikanae at the Reikorangi Community Hall - hence the title which seemed to roll nicely off the tongue.
