Little is known of Paul Destribaud (1828-1911) and the booklet "15 Mélodies pour chant" was published in 1885. The three stanzas chosen by Destribaud are taken from a long poem by Victor Hugo, "Au bord de la mer" (At the sea side) dated 1834 (from "Les Chants du crépuscule" 1835). Jules Massenet also set it to music, choosing the same 1st and 3rd stanzas but a different 2nd stanza –he gave his setting the title "C’est l’amour". The setting by Alain Jacques selects the same three stanzas as Paul Destribaud.
